Top 18 Free Downloads

Monday, February 11th, 2008

hitachi.gif Today, I’m republishing a list of my Top 18 free computer applications. I’m using all of these on a regular basis, and all come highly recommended. Most of these are being updated all the time, so even if you already have some of these installed it’s worth re-checking the authors website for the latest version.

FastStone Image Viewer Best Free Digital Image Viewer - The FastStone Image Viewer is a fast, user-friendly image browser that supports all major graphic formats. It’s also got good basic image editing facilities, a great slide show and a very good looking interface.

The world’s best media player. - The GOM Media Player offers support for most file formats without the need to obtain a codec. Many of its features are much better than Windows Media Player, including the ability to play broken media files, alter speed, frame capture etc. The control panel is easy to use and lets you customize just about everything.

WikiPad - best Notepad ever - How do you manage all of the random bits of information in your personal and professional life? Word documents, text files, Microsoft Outlook folders/notes. cheeseburger_2.jpg Lolcats ‘n’ Funny Pictures is a hilarious website containing, you guessed it, hundreds of pictures of funny cats, each with it’s own funny caption. Anyone can submit a picture and add a funny caption using The Lol Builder. The most popular are then screened on the front page. This winning system has made it one of the most visited blogs on the Web.

Ask the readers: new site design

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I’ve now had several visitors saying they miss the old Home Page, and don’t like the new design. I must say I was not entirely satisfied with the “new look” myself. So I’ve altered the design back to the original colours, and am considering bringing back some of the old features.

It saddens me to upset my regular visitors, but you can help me by letting me know which parts of the old Home Page you miss, and which parts of the new Home Page you like or dislike. I can then better decide on what further alterations to make. Many thanks!

Best free Time Management tools

Monday, February 4th, 2008

This week I’m covering online Time Management tools, all based around creating to-do lists. My Top three utilities range from the extremely simple to more complex …

TodoPub

todopub.gif TodoPub is an extremely easy-to-use site. Just add each task, prioritize and save. When each task is done, just tick the box and it’s struck out, but still visible.

Remember The Milk

remember_the_milk.gifRemember The Milk manages a set of task lists for you, which you can group by location, priority and due date. This makes it compatible with the famous Getting Things Done system as preached by David Allen at www.davidco.com.

You can quickly see which tasks are overdue, how they rank in importance, and if any need to be achieved at particular locations. A nice feature is the ability to email items to your list so you don’t have to log in every time you want to add an entry.

Simple.ology

simpleology.gifSimple.ology is not so much a Time Management system, more a way of life, designed to free up more time in your life. Simple.ology promises to let you see your day with instant clarity, focus instantly on what´s important, dump the rest and clear your brain of clutter and distraction.

The system combines short videos, workbooks and reading materials, to be used for a short time each day. Each day, you will “learn the steps to achieving your dreams.” The recently added “Desktop Cockpit” software makes it even more user friendly (and fun!)

More crazy stuff

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Do you waste way too much time in Cyberspace? Well here’s your chance to waste a few more hours with this week’s selection of crazy websites. All of them absolutely free, but definitely priceless!

Lies, All Lies!

Dave pondering … hmmmmmDid you know that the first 8,000 copies of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 album, Let’s Get It On were made of solid oak? But wait, could that be a lie? You can’t believe everything your read on the Web. Outdated facts, popular misconceptions, and even downright mistruths are presented as fact. Dave has been trawling the Web to compile a massive database of over 4,000 lies. There’s a Lie of the Day, Celebrity Liars and Guest Liars. Dave’s Web of Lies is very funny, and well worth a visit.

Tomatoes are evil!

Evil TommyCould this be another of those dastardly Web lies? hmmmm … Tomatoes are evil is dedicated to the percentage of the Earth’s population who DON’T LIKE TOMATOES. We are not talking about a mild dislike or a medical allergy; but the realisation that this fruit is the SPAWN OF SATAN. The site includes Evil Games, Evil Facts and even an Evil Shop.

Destroy the Web!

bang!Ever wanted to be a hacker and destroy your most-hated website? Well here’s your chance! Over at Netdisaster you can have fun nuking websites, destroying them with meteors and dropping heaps of cow dung on them. And there’s dozens of other ways to destroy your target-site should you wish.

Of course, Netdisaster doesn’t actually destroy websites. It only simulates attacks and destructions. If you really want to make the site you hate unavailable, you should have an actual aircraft dropping actual bombs on the sites server. Or you could ask an actual cow to go and drop its dung onto the harddrive of your enemy’s host.
